Me: Would you increase the withholding, please?

SH: You mean you don't want a [huge] refund next year?

Me: You mean I don't want to make an interest-free loan to the government next year?

SH: You forget. "Government" has a positive connotation for me.

This would make more sense if it said "decrease" the withholding.

I mean the number of allowances, which need to be increased. He knew what I meant.

There is a provision in tax law that allows people to pay more taxes than what they owe. I have yet to meet a lefty who uses that option.
