Question for my readers

First, a cat photo, because it's been a while.

Now. I am doing some work for a friend from grad school. My task is to find out who buys relationship advice books and how they decide which ones to buy. If you would be so kind as to answer these questions in the comments, I would be very grateful.

1. Have you ever bought a dating/marriage/relationship advice book for yourself or for someone else?
2. If so, how did you decide which one to get? (I.e., recommended in a magazine, a friend told you about it, went to the bookstore and flipped through a few.)
3. If you haven't bought one, but if you were to buy one, how would you choose it?
4. Are you male or female? Married or single? Age?

Thank you!

Um - I have never bought relationship type books before. I tend to wing it.

2. no n/a
3. I would choose one that was also guaranteed to make me rich, had an irresistible title, or was written by someone bizarre like Keith Richards.
Probably would never buy a book like that.

I've never bought one. If I ever did, I would buy one from an orthodox Catholic perspective. I am female, married with 5 kids and that's why I will never need to buy one.

I bought "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" because, well... it was a popular title. I'm currently 29 & married, but at the time I bought it I think I was 20-ish & in a relationship with a loser. :)

1. no
2. n/a
3. If I was going to, I'd probably go on a very close friend's recommendation or on Amazon browsing. I don't think I'd want to browse relationship/self-help books in public. Nothing wrong with them, but I'd feel very self-conscious.
4. female, married, 32

1. No, never.
2. n/a
3. I seriously doubt I'd buy one, but playing along, I guess I'd check the readers' reviews on to see what other people thought. I'd also go to B & N and flip through books until I found one/some I liked.
4. Female, married almost 20 years, 41.

I've bought several. Some because they were much-talked-about and I wanted to see what they said. I've bought others on the recommendation of my marriage counselor or friends. Those tended to be helpful. Then there was the one my husband brought home and said, "If you'd just do the things in this book I'd treat you better!" Yeah, I divorced him. So I suppose you could say THAT book worked best of all.

2. My therapist told me to. Really.
3. I'd get one that was funny and held my interest. I like the second comment - written by someone bizarre like Keith Richards.
4. Female. Married (for 7 months). 40 years old.
