Marriage 401, Lecture 561: Underwater

SH: How can you eat that stuff (Splenda)? It has chlorine in it! It's bad for you!

Me: Do you know how much water I probably swallow when I swim? Do you know how much chlorine I probably ingest? A lot more than comes in the two teaspoons of Splenda I have in my coffee every morning.

SH: It's bad for you.

Warning: you're probably not going to like this comment... the chlorine in Splenda is not going to hurt you, but what might be worse is that using two teaspoons is like 600 times as sweet as two teaspoons of real sugar. The bad thing it does is get you used to sweeter drinks, so that over time one tends to eat and drink more and more sweet stuff - much of which IS high calorie. in many ways you would be better off the use the sugar (32 calories for two teaspoons), but it will not taste sweet enough to you at first. There is a growing opinion that the use of sweeteners is helping to fuel the obesity crisis, not solve it.

Please feel free to ignore this advice! And, don't tell SH!

Webb, I hadn't thought about that, but it's a good point. I have found myself eating way too many sweets lately.
